Character Info
◎ Character's Name: Anise Tatlin
◎ Character's Canon: Tales of the Abyss
◎ Character's Age: 13
◎ Canon Point: Post-Absorption Gate, meeting up with Luke and co again in Daath. In terms of previous game development, post-endgame of
dreamsland
◎ Background/History: Wiki!
◎ Is the character a hacker and/or do they have a sixth-sense? No!
◎ Personality: Anise is a completely adorable, cutesy, energetic, innocent, and helpless little girl who would never hurt a fly! There's nothing suspicious about her at all, she's definitely not the kind of girl who'd try to scam you or manipulate you to her advantage, and when she professes her love to a man who coincidentally happens to be rich, there's nothing shady about it, nothing at all! Just true love, even if he happens to be three times (or more) her age.
Yeah, right.
In reality, that's the image that Anise would love to broadcast of herself – specifically to prospective husbands. Underneath that bubbly, childish, girlish exterior (or flirtatious, if she thinks she can marry you for your money) is a genuinely observant, manipulative, clever young girl. A downright impish one, at that. Two very gullible parents constantly falling into debt have caused Anise to grow up (somewhat) too fast, and it shows. She's cynical, suspicious of others, quick to spot possible manipulations (but not to stop herself from doing them, though hers are usually not too malicious), jaded and somewhat vindictive. She's blunt and quick to lose patience with anyone who doesn't give her her way or anyone she sees as up on a high horse (such as certain nobles), and can be downright violent, vulgar, and ruthless when provoked. It take a special kind of preteen girl to scream "I'll kill you bastards!" when thrown out a window. To say she's got a nasty temper is a bit of an understatement.
Her greed is unmistakable. Aside from her eternal quest to marry into money (using her girlish charms and aggressive flirting techniques), Anise would do practically anything to get a quick gald, up to (but not limited to: marrying into money, chasing after butterflies and nearly falling off a cliff, whining at the party to give her allowance money to spend at the casino, and many more). This is mostly due to her parents' financial situation (namely, crippling debt), but Anise is a girl who likes to occasionally indulge herself just the same. She's also nosy and into prying into others' business, which comes hand in hand with her parents' situation – to get them out of debt, she had to become a spy for Mohs and occasionally, it shows.
For all her faults, there are many virtues... somewhere. Aside from the occasional (or often) teasing, she has a good heart and cares deeply for anyone who makes it to the friend category. She's mature for her age (in some aspects), intelligent, protective of her friends, and has a surprisingly soft side. Aside from a lot of genuine caring and protectiveness over the Fon Master she's meant to protect (a damsel in distress who could give her parents a run for their money in terms of kindness and gullibility), Anise has been known to sympathize with pathetic, down-on-their luck losers, as well as her own enemies who hated her. Most of her actions are her efforts to protect her parents and save them from Mohs (and themselves), as well, as much as she may complain about their extreme gullibility. It's also clear that she takes Ion's well-being personally, despite her frustrations over his similarly kind and easily deceived nature. She clearly resents having to deceive him and harbors a lot of guilt.
Though she may act helpless for her own wants or ends, when Anise is genuinely vulnerable or shaken, she hides it under boisterous, cheerful determination, doing her best to cover it up so as not to worry anyone else or let on weakness. Despite having grown up quickly and being both a soldier and highly independent and formidable person, she is still, at heart, a genuine kid. While the cutesy little girl behavior she exudes is mostly played up as a front, there are genuinely childish aspects to her personality that occasionally peek out. She can behave recklessly or emotionally, despite how 'grown up' she acts, she's had her fair share of the kind of vulnerable moments that can be expected from a young girl. For example, though she complains about Ion quite frequently, she gets quite angry if anyone else dares to. Despite her resistance to showing weakness, she ends up being openly emotional a few times, due to guilt over her deception, or because of the people she's had to kill. At one point, she can be found crying over the fate (and the fact that she would never fall in love) of one such enemy, another young girl who hated her and attacked her viciously.
◎ Powers/Abilities: Anise primarily battles from on-top of Tokunaga, using the doll to dole out physical hits (which comprise of mostly punching or bludgeoning), while she casts fonic artes (essentially JRPG magic, drawing on 'fonons', which are the sound-based energy particles that make up Auldrant and allow people to use artes) with use of her wand. The doll itself has high physical strength and is what allows her to physically damage her opponents, as Anise herself is small and far easier to overpower. However, she has been shown to be strong for her age and durable, surviving getting thrown out the window of a hulking landship with little troubles.
The artes she casts are primarily offensive, based in the light/dark elements, respectively. (For example: Negative Gate is an arte that creates a sphere of dark energy to damage enemies), with one or two that increase the defenses of herself or her party members. As mentioned, fonons are what comprise the world of Auldrant and casters, such as Anise, are able to draw on the sound energy particles to cast. The combination of her artes with Tokunaga's melee damage is really what makes her a formidable (if slow) opponent. She's a close-range fighter, relying on Tokunaga to stun or bludgeon her enemies as she casts.
While physically small and young, Anise is a trained soldier and is, as mentioned, quite durable. Having had to be self-sufficient and work her way up through Auldrant's equivalent to the peacekeeping military, she's quite self-sufficient and has picked up sharp survival skills and the knowledge of military tactics and strategies. She's independent and cunning, quick to see through deceptions (due to being deceptive herself), and competent. As a soldier, she's trained to risk her life to protect herself and others, particularly the Fon Master (the leader of the religious order), as she serves as his bodyguard. She's highly independent, able to take care of herself and others despite her young age, and she's even the best cook of the party.
◎ Weapons & Other Special Inventory: 1. Tokunaga, a doll that appears harmless, but that can grow to a huge size at Anise's command, large enough for her to ride. In battle, she uses it to attack while she rides on its back.
2. Her wand, a Gothic Mace.
3. A lollipop staff, a useless weapon.
4. Her clothing and equipment!
5. Lemon gels.
6. Pineapple gels.
CEREALIA-Specific
◎ Element: Fire
◎ Sense: Sight! While Auldrant and fonic artes are comprised of and tied strongly to sound, Anise is a spy and relies on her sight foremost. Her battle style is quite aggressive and direct and likewise relies on sight.
◎ Seven Character Traits:
[ + ] Energetic, Cunning, Playful
[ - ] Greedy, Short-tempered, Cynical
[ +/- ] Headstrong
Samples
◎ First-Person Sample: Here!, Here! I can provide more if necessary.
◎ Third-Person Sample: This was getting on her nerves. All these geezers, only a few of them looked rich and none of them seemed at all interested in a marriage proposal. The best she'd gotten was a fistful of gald to go buy sweets, and from the condescending pat on the head Anise had gotten in tandem, she'd been ready to shove that fistful of gald where the sun didn't shine.
Hmph. Maybe if she'd had a body like Tear's... That thought drew a long sigh out of her, as she looked up and down her own figure. Well, she still had years to grow melons.... Maybe she'd ask Tear for her secret, whenever the lovebirds decided to show.
Tear and Luke.... what was taking them so long to get here, anyway? The Fon Master wanted to see them, (and Luke was still viable as husband, the rich son of a duke~) and Van or no Van, things were far from settled. Mohs was up to his usual schemes, and all of her unsuccessful attempts at getting her parents to hold on to even a single gald were just putting her deeper and deeper into Mohs's sweaty clutches. His orders were clear. Watch everything. Send him news of everything, or else.
And as much as it pained her to look into Ion's eyes and deceive him – deceive him about everything – what choice did she have? Even if she came clean with him... he'd probably never blame her. And that was the worst part. Just thinking about it was sending her into a fit of moodiness, and with no current targets (as the slimy geezers had left already), there wasn't even a single person or thing to distract her from--
"Excuse me--"
Anise looked up suddenly. What was that? Someone addressing her? A tourist, perhaps?
"Young lady," the man - a balding, mild-mannered tradesman from the looks of it, (maybe from Sheridan?) nodded at her and smiled politely. "I was wondering if there's someone who could show me around Daath... you are with the Order of the Lorelei, are you not?"
What good timing! A chance! She lit up immediately, clasping her hands together and bouncing in the man's direction, a bright smile on her face.
"You're looking at the cutest guide of Daath right now~ I'd be happy to show you around town... for a small price."
A small price of 500 gald, if all went well. A first-time visiting tradesman was probably too dense to realize that tours of Daath weren't meant to be paid for, so maybe she could at least score a bit more than pocket change this time.
Well, only one way to find out.
◎ Is your character retaining any previous game memories? Yes! Anise was played in a short-term mafia game called
dreamsland. Though the game took place over a short period of time ICly, it had quite an impact! Over forty people were trapped in an abandoned theme park, many of them divided into roles and pitted against each other. Anise was one such - she was a VIP, part of a group of individuals who were heavily brainwashed into thinking the set up was a game and the only way to save people was to kill them. Though Anise had her doubts (as she was also promised the safety of her parents and Fon Master Ion in exchange for her cooperation as part of the parcel), she was too heavily brainwashed to properly question anything. She had a forced partnership with an older man that tied her life directly to his.
However, she fell into the role of hidden killer quite easily, despite her guilt at having to deceive people, even if she didn't believe the deaths were real and merely a 'waking'. She played up her cutesy innocent side to fellow killers and players alike, hoping to keep her emotional distance, but ended up growing closer and fonder to others than anticipated, especially as the killer group formed a pseudo-family.. of sorts. She also put her flirting to use when dealing with the various rich men she encountered. Though Anise was a competent mafia, she met an abrupt end when her partner was targeted by a rogue bomber, causing Anise to 'die' several hours later.
In the end, it was discovered that the deaths were fake and the entire thing was a cruel experiment to test the limits of mind control - and when the brainwashing wore off, Anise was horrified by what she'd done. She received support and forgiveness from her victims (some of which she had been friends with), but her guilt lingered. The game came to abrupt end with help supposedly on the way to take everyone home - except that she didn't quite end up in her intended destination...
